Before you enter
- Do not enter cold water alone. Have someone nearby who can help.
- Choose a place with a clear, easy exit and avoid hazards.
- If you have heart disease, high blood pressure, are pregnant, or have other health concerns, speak with a doctor first.
While in the water
- Cold water can cause sudden gasping and rapid breathing. Focus on steady, comfortable breathing; keep your head above water.
- Leave the water immediately if you have chest pain, dizziness, breathing difficulty, confusion, or any other sign that you feel unwell.
- Do not stay in the water to finish a timer. A timer cannot tell you what is safe for your body.
